Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The 2 student Alternative Break Co-coordinators that organize the trip choose 8-10 students. 1 AS staff member typically accompanies students on the trips as well. Thus, a total of 11-13 students go on an individual trip.
The trip is open to all UCSB students!
Unfortunately, we cannot reveal the trip location in advance due to the potential of biases; after all, if we choose to volunteer in Florida, we want students who want to volunteer, not students who simply want to go to Florida! However, the trip location is made public to chosen volunteers during a private pre-trip meeting and on our Instagram after the trip has occurred!
We also have a list of previous trip locations on our website if you’d like to see where Cabbies have gone before! The link is provided below:

No! The trip is entirely free, as it is already paid by student fees. CAB is an AS Entity, which means that our funds come from a Lock-in fee that is regularly voted on and affirmed by students every couple of years. Paid expenses include the volunteer opportunities, flights, any travel, food, and housing accommodations. The only things that you will have to pay for are personal snacks/souvenirs, if you choose to bring anything back home with you as a memento <3
All UCSB students are invited to fill out the applications for both Winter and Spring Break! No previous volunteering experience is required, as we want to open up the trips to as many people as possible. Just come with a love for community service and the courage to brave unknown territory!
Applications open typically around Weeks 3 – 4 and close around Weeks 5 – 6 in Fall and Winter Quarter.
The flyer is posted in our CAB Caremail as well as on our Instagram (@ucsbcab). A university wide announcement typically goes out as well, so keep a lookout in your student email!
The Winter Break and Spring Break trips are both a week long, with 2 days reserved for travel to and from the location, 3 days of actual volunteering, and 1 free day to explore the local community, sightsee, and do other fun activities with your fellow volunteers!
